European stocks open higher on Monday, benefiting from the rebound on Wall Street that propelled the S&P 500 to a new record high in the previous session. Investors are eagerly anticipating the European Central Bank’s upcoming policy decision this week.
As of 0810 GMT, the pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 0.7%, recovering from a 1.5% decline last week.
On Friday, the S&P 500 achieved a two-year high, driven by a surge in U.S. chipmakers and prominent technology stocks.
In the euro zone, technology stocks saw a 1.2% increase on Monday.
ASML Holdings experienced a 2.2% rise, with Bernstein upgrading the Dutch semiconductor equipment maker’s rating from “market-perform” to “outperform,” contributing to the sector’s overall gains.
Investors are closely focused on the upcoming monetary policy decision from the European Central Bank scheduled for January 25, seeking insights into the potential timing of interest rate reductions by the central bank.
In other market movements, Kindred’s shares surged by 16.8% following a takeover bid by French gaming company La Francaise des Jeux for its European online counterpart, valued at $0.28 billion. La Francaise’s shares also rose by nearly 5%.
