The Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged on Wednesday but acknowledged recent progress on inflation and a cooling labor market, sparking investor hopes that the central bank might soon begin cutting rates.
The Fed has maintained interest rates over the past year as it assesses incoming data to guide policy decisions. Recent reports indicating progress on inflation and easing labor market tightness suggest that the Fed’s restrictive policies are proving effective after a series of volatile inflation data earlier this year.
The latest core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, shows inflation holding steady at 2.6% for the 12 months ending in June, moving closer to the central bank’s 2% target.
“Inflation has eased over the past year but remains somewhat elevated,” the Fed said Wednesday in its July policy statement.
“The Committee judges that the risks to achieving its employment and inflation goals continue to move into better balance,” the Fed added.
With interest rates consistently hovering at a high 5.5%, market sentiment has been significantly impacted. Upon the announcement, along with hints of a potential rate cut in September, the dollar index—which measures the U.S. currency—experienced a significant decline.
This decline implies a rise in gold prices and other precious metals due to concerns over currency devaluation and the effects of inflation.
In the long term, gold prices are expected to continuously increase over time, making it a reliable investment category for new investors. However, in the current phase, with clearer signs of potential rate cuts, a new economic cycle is gradually emerging.
The opportunity to grow wealth is approaching, so it’s essential to equip yourself with solid knowledge and sufficient capital to be ready for this new phase—the golden period for wealth accumulation.
